Background

Taiwan is a small country with its own unique traditional culture.  In my generation, we have been familiar with and interested in American, Korean, and Japanese pop culture.  Many people of my generation have forgotten how incredible traditional Taiwanese culture is. Majority consider traditional Taiwanese culture cheesy and not cool.  I will show you it’s not.

It is my intention to start this magazine for the purpose of highlighting the work of brilliant Taiwanese artists who creatively combine modern and traditional Taiwanese cultures.

One unique element of Taiwanese culture is the betel nut. The betel nut is an areca nut, or what Taiwan locals call “bing lang,” has been around for thousands of years.

Consuming the nut in any of its forms gives the user a warm, stimulating buzz, making it a product of choice with taxi drivers, long-haul truckers, and other workers who rely on the nut to make it through long shifts.  The role of the betel nut in Taiwanese culture is a topic that should be developed by combining interests in traditional Taiwanese culture and modern artistic expression.

Being Taiwanese, I would like to introduce what’s new to Taiwanese culture and discover the sparking, vivid of Taiwanese fashion and art to my audience.  My magazine will be just like the betel nut: cool, unique, and a little bit rebellious.
