I have always liked indie music more than pop music, a few months ago, I heard a beautiful voice that caught my attention on Spotify, her name is 9m88. Her voice is warm, deep, and powerful, it’s perfect for singing Jazz. The songs she sings are all in her native tongue, Mandarin, she is the first Mandarin Jazz Artist. Lately, she has been performing in a lot of music festivals in Asia.
9m88 is a very interested name, she combined her english name Joan and her nick name in Mandarin “baba”(The pronunciation of 9 in mandarin is “Jo”) Baba was born in Taiwan, she went to fashion designer school in Taiwan. But realized that what she really want to do is sing. She moved to New York to attend The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music to put herself into real training to become a singer. She went to a lot of music shows and Jazz bars to look for opportunities. New York has inspired her a lot, and just like what we see in the movie, you will meet some talented strangers in a bar, and you would be inspired by people everyday.
She’s telling people her stories and her philosophy with her songs, as a young female artist, she has her own ideologies in life, “always have a strong heart, experience this world as much as possible, and have a deep conversation with yourself once a week”.
