Say Yes to Taiwan

Updated: May 12, 2019

To be recognized as an independent nation – this is the wish of Taiwan film directory Fu Yue which he made clear during the awarding ceremony at the Golden Horse Award in China. Taiwan and China’s rift has not seized since the end of the World War II, despite the decision of diverse nations around the world, including the United States, to recognize Taiwan’s nationhood. While many great nations have stood-up to recognize such independence publicly, very few individuals have failed to do the same due to fear of having a hard life afterwards.

It is due to such possible adverse consequences of going against China that diverse articles were written to show support and admiration to Fu Yue. In an article published and written by Taipei Times, for example, Yue’s speech was considered a “freedom beacon,” the same description and admiration was communicated in an article written by Vincent Sing and Tseung Kwan O. Other articles such as that written by Allan Wong, praised Yue’s act by stating that what it was something that even Hollywood will not do something against China.

Fu Yue’s speech reminds me of the scene from the movie “Hunger Games”. The old man who was fearless and raised his three fingers to support Katniss Everdeen, even he knew his choice had a consequence. It’s brave to be the first person to stand up to authority. Everything has a a spark, same sex marriage would never happened in United States without Harvey Milk’s contribution. As a Taiwanese person, I was touched by Fu Yue’s speech and I wish one day my country will be recognized and treated as a truly independent entity.
