The Great Buddha+

The film focuses on a community of poor Taiwanese laborers. Pickle works as a security guard at a firm that manufactures monuments of Buddha. He is often joined by Belly Button, his best friend, in his prison of an office. Kevin, Pickle’s boss, is a wealthy supporter of the corrupt regime who is hiding his immoral behaviors behind his connections. Getting bored by such acts, Belly and pickle begin to get away with dash-cam from Kevin’s Mercedes. Though the footage shows the road, the sound of Kevin is captured and as well as the mischief.

Pickle and Belly get mesmerized by Kevin’s sexual prowess, taking long to realize how he treats women when he gets tied to them.

The poor Taiwanese commenting on how colorful it is to be rich is a clear indication of the gap that exists between the rich and the poor since the poor can only connect with the rich via the camera footage. The idea of eradicating poverty is otherwise unimaginable while the dream of enjoying life is archaic.

There are some elements of dejected dialogue in the entire film on how to exist in an unfair society; thus, becoming unworried about the daily injustices and strive to live with them. Huang’s narration includes a comparison of the characters whose livelihood is overlooked. The empathy allows for an in-depth understanding of the unfairness as well as building some pathos that elevate the story into a moral tale.

The narrator employs some charming satire. It conflicts with the environment of hopeless melancholy. In fitting in the two, the narrator fails to embrace fairness to either tone. Therefore, the film feels occasionally frustrating and messy. The same scenario is evident in the films’ politics, which are connected only tenuously but boldly flaunted.

Huang creates suspense in the audience by giving the viewers room to imagine the eventuality. For instance, the incomplete Great Buddha statue that is commissioned for a temple gets its top glued on overnight. Finally, the film also mocks the sleaziness and corruption among the politicians as Kevin and adjutant engage in a bitter exchange that hints at a failed land development deal.
